Post-Surgery Chemotherapy Treatment Experiences of Older Male Patients with Stomach Cancer

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study is to understand the treatment experiences of male elderly stomach cancer patients who are going through chemotherapy after the surgery in Korean socio-cultural context and to provide base data that will help develop adequate social services for this population. This study used Colaizzi¡¯s phenomenological methodology. The research participants comprised of 7 male elderly patients who were diagnosed with stomach cancer after the age of 65. With purposive sampling, the data were gathered with in-depth interviews. The data were analyzed based on 6 steps of Colaizzi¡¯s phenomenological method. As a results, 9 theme clusters and 20 themes emerged and the theme clusters are as follow: "encounter with uninvited visitor, the cancer", "a hell-like ICU", "a punishment named chemotherapy", "joyless and helpless life", "restructuring life for health", "family as the best pillar for me", "doctors who influences my life and death", "simplified meaning of life", and "insufficient medical services". Based on these results chemotherapy treatment experiences of male elderly stomach cancer patients after the surgery were discussed in Korean socio-cultural context and some social work implications and suggestions for the future studies are suggested.
